Last night was an amazing night for WLW fans in Richmond Missouri!
The first two matches were to decide who would compete for the WLW heavyweight title in the main event. - Please remember that this write-up is from my own perspective though I try to be objective... My review is non-technical especially since I am new here and don't know all the do's and don'ts.
Up first was Mark Sterling and Leland Race.
Though Race has the size advantage Sterling has a panache and control that gives him the advantage in speed. The match focused on submission holds and suplex variations with Leland Race getting the count and becoming one of the finalists for the belt.
Next was Jon Webb and Elvis Aliaga.
Jon had the high flying build that my family adores but did not get a lot of opportunity to showcase his talent. Elvis took a lot of breathers during the match, taking a stroll around the ring and inciting the fans to levels of heel hate usually reserved for wrestlers who are worse than just cocky. However, Aliaga's attention to detail and his surprising speed brought him out on top to win the match and become the 2nd contender for the WLW title.
Followed by a tag team match of the Black Hand Warriors and Rope & Rangle.
Maybe it was an off night but this match did not seem to have the energy I expect from a tag team match. Rope & Rangle were greatly in synch though and for the combination moves they performed they did them with great precision. While there was some playing up to the fans by the Black Hand Warriors and one great chase around the wring this felt a little flat and to be perfectly honest I'm not sure who won though I think it was Rope & Rangle.
Last bout before the main event was the premier of Jameil Harris against veteran Dustin Bosworth. Jameil brought out the pizzazz during his introduction and Bosworth looked great...not sure about the shorts but he looked great! I had the opportunity to be sitting in front of his family during the match and I knew they had had a very rough and long trip to get to the event today but I was grateful they all made the effort to get Dustin to the show and show their support. Sometimes though, when a veteran is against a newbie it slows them both down. These two didn't seem to click throughout the match so the moves seemed a little oddly timed though there were several great moves. Both wrestlers performed well. I had to make a mommy run just as this match was ending but I think Harris picked up the win.
Finally, we get to the finale of Leland Race against Elvis for the WLW heavyweight championship. I'm going to sound incredibly critical but it is my opinion that Leland needs to tighten up his ring skills. His bumps tended to be a little sloppy, even his standing drop kicks, though he got an impressive height for someone with his build, just seemed off the mark. He showed some serious drive and great strength but then he seemed to be moving through mud the next moment. Despite this, he and Elvis had a fairly good match which was complicated by the arrival of the Black Hand Warriors and a chair to the head of Race. This led Elvis to the win by a knockout 3 count and he got the belt. Race did a great job of selling this hit though and it was with some trepidation we saw some of the guys come out from the back to help him from the ring. A resounding cheer celebrated the moment that Race seemed to get back to his own two feet though and for that I'm grateful. I love the sport and sometimes people get very very hurt which is unfortunate.
So that's my amateur wrap-up. It was worth every minute of the drive and my family had fun.
